Rural minority communities are disproportionately impacted by industrial hog operations in eastern North Carolina. People of color have been burdened with a host of issues including health risks from noxious odors and polluted water, as well as the socioeconomic devaluation of predominately non-white areas. I created Ecofuge to make environmental justice more attainable through a campaign designed to inform affected and neighboring communities and galvanize the public into taking political action.

ABOUT THE APP
Having access to resources is necessary for alleviating environmental burdens from affected communities. I created a mobile app that concentrates resources, petitions, and non-profit organizations centered around environmental justice in North Carolina. With the app, users can sign petitions related to a host of issues including CAFOs, landfills, and coal ash. Additionally, users can discover local and state-wide organizations, use the calendar to find meetings in their area, and organize their own environmental events.

CALLING FOR CHANGE
The best way to push toward environmental protection is to put pressure on the state and the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality to impose stricter regulations on concentrated animal farming operations (CAFOs). This series of postcards is addressed to state representatives for residents to fill out and call for changes in environmental policies.
